Frequently Asked Questions

GENERAL

How much light is needed for a baseball field?
Uniformity of illumination is as important as the amount of light in determining the overall quality of the lighting system. In most cases, the amount of light required for a little league field, a high school field, a college field, or a professional field will be dictated by the size of the space. As the space (and the level of play) increases, more light will be needed. Architects’ construct manuals and outline light levels with descriptions of each category. In general, light level recommendations are as follows: Youth/Amateur = 30 fc infield/20 fc outfield, High School = 50 fc infield/30 fc outfield, College = 70 fc infield/50 fc outfield, Professional = 150 fc infield/100 fc outfield

What is the best luminaire correlated color temperature (CCT) for a baseball field?
CCT describes the overall color appearance of the light source in Kelvin degrees. “Cooler’ light sources will have a higher Kelvin temperature, and “warmer” light sources will lower Kelvin temperature. We recommend light fixtures with a cooler temperature of 5000K.

How long do LED lights last?
Some LEDs have a rated life of up to 100,000 hours with barely any reduction in light quality. By comparison, metal halide lights and high-pressure sodium lights will not last for more than 20,000 and 24,000 hours, respectively and their light quality will degrade over time.

Is there anything I need in addition to the light fixtures?
Well-designed and implemented controls will save energy and prolong the life of the lighting system. A control system is an effective way to engage the lights only when needed and turn the lights off when not in use. A typical control system may use a combination of scheduling, photocells, and motion sensors to ensure the lighting system operates only when needed.

What maintenance is required on LED luminaires?
In general, our LED lights are maintenance-free. Still, periodic visual inspections are recommended to ensure fixtures are working correctly.

How much energy will I save?
Compared to traditional HID sources, your can realize up to 75% in energy savings with LED.

Pole(s)

How Many Light Poles Are Required for Baseball Lighting?
The number of light poles you will need will depend on the size of the field. Plan on a 4-, 6-, or 8-pole layout. At least two poles are needed for infield lighting and an additional two to six for infield and outfield lighting. You can determine the number of poles that you’ll need by the distance between the home plate and the center field fence. 200-250 feet will require a 4-pole layout. 300 feet will require a 6-pole layout. 400 feet will require an 8-pole layout. Any ballpark that needs to meet the lighting standards for TV broadcasts will require an 8-pole layout.

How do I choose the proper height for baseball field light poles?
This will depend on the level of play. For example, little league baseball light poles will be shorter than light poles for higher levels for play due to the smaller field. The same thing would apply for softball field lighting. Recommendations are as follows: 50-70 feet for Youth/Amateur, 60-80 feet for High School, 70-90 feet for College, 80-100+ feet for Professional.

What is the best pole to use for baseball field applications?
We recommend round tapered steel poles which can be combined with our sports power bar light fixtures. Our sports power bar fixtures are also compatible with existing wood poles.

Can you install USB ports and electrical outlets in light poles?
Yes, when ordering your poles, include an extra handhole with your pole options. With this option, you can specify which height and side of the pole the receptacle should be located.

How much does a baseball field lighting solution cost?
You will want to contact us to receive accurate pricing and prevent buying more than you need to cover your space(s).
