Softball Field Lighting

Since 1998, LightMart’s Light Poles and Sports Power Bar Light Fixtures have illuminated softball fields across the U.S. We offer the right lighting solutions to satisfy players, spectators, and surrounding communities.

Softball fields require precise illumination due to their compact geometry, high-activity infields, and shorter baselines. LightMart provides turnkey softball lighting systems engineered for infield visibility, outfield uniformity, glare control, and safe nighttime play. LightMart simplifies both new field installations and LED retrofits, ensuring compliance with softball field lighting standards and avoiding common mistakes based on baseball layouts.

Softball Field Lighting Layout & Design Considerations

  • The speed of play in the infield will require a higher level of visibility than the outfield. Players will need brighter lighting to effectively see line drives and ground balls.
  • Glare reduction is achieved with LED lighting systems that utilize anti-glare shielding, advanced optic lenses, uniform illuminance levels, and a consistent color temperature (CCT).
  • Light pole placement will depend on the level of play and the number of poles used. Higher levels of play will require more poles/light fixtures. Four light poles are the minumum amount required while six and eight pole configurations are required for higher levels of play and televised games.
  • Pole height should be 40-70 feet. Taller poles provide improved visibility and help to minimize shadows.
  • Uniform light distribution minimizes dark spots and shadows. Proper light pole placement and light fixture aiming enhances player performance and safety.
  • Softball field lighting requirements are not the same as baseball fields. This is partly due to the difference in field size. Softball fields typically have a shorter distance between home plate and outfield walls compared to baseball fields.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the recommended footcandle (fc) levels for softball infields and outfields?

This will depend on the level of play and the area of the field. For the outfield, 30-40 fc is recommended for all levels. For the infield, we recommend 50 fc for recreational play and 75-150 fc for collegiate and professional levels.

How many light poles are required to light a softball field?

A minimum of four light poles is required for lower levels of play and small fields. Six and eight pole configurations are required for higher levels of play.

Where should light poles be positioned on a softball field for proper illumination?

For four pole configurations, two poles should be located on either side of home plate and two poles should be located near the outfield fence at the foul lines.

For six pole configurations, two poles should be located on either side of home plate, two poles should be located near 1st and 3rd bases, and two poles should be located in the outfield.

Eight pole configurations will be the same as six pole configurations with two additional poles located in the outfield.

What is the recommended mounting height for softball field light poles?

Pole height should be 40-70 feet. Taller poles provide improved visibility and help to minimize shadows.

What type of LED light fixtures are best for softball field lighting?

We recommend LED sports lights. They have a high lumen output, are energy-efficient, and long-lasting.

What is the best luminaire correlated color temperature (CCT) for a baseball field?
CCT describes the overall color appearance of the light source in Kelvin degrees. “Cooler’ light sources will have a higher Kelvin temperature, and “warmer” light sources will lower Kelvin temperature. We recommend light fixtures with a cooler temperature of 5000K to 6000K.
