Frequently Asked Questions
What is the ideal brightness level for football fields?
Football field lighting standards will depend on the level of play. The higher the level of competition, the brighter the field must be, especially if games are televised.
Brightness is measured in two ways: lumens and foot candles. Put simply, lumens measure the brightness of a light source, whereas foot candles measure the amount of light that reaches the surface of the area that is to be illuminated. In the case of a football field, the light level that reaches the field is measured in foot candles.
Here are some general IES guidelines:
Local Training, School, and Recreational Level = 20-30 foot candles
High School Level = 30-50 foot candles
Collegiate Level = 50-100 foot candles
How many light poles are needed to illuminate a football field?
Football fields are the same size, regardless of the level of play. However, different levels of play still have different lighting requirements. Higher levels of play are likely to have more spectators (and larger stadiums). They are also more likely to be televised. Both of these scenarios will require a higher level of light output.
There are three types of football stadium light pole systems used to light a football field: 4-pole, 6-pole, and 8-pole. All three configurations have the light poles placed along the sidelines.
A 4-pole configuration provides uniform light levels and can be used for recreational or small high school fields. Each pole is placed around the 20-yard line.
A 6-pole configuration should be used for larger high school and smaller college stadiums. This is the minimum number of poles/lights that you’ll want to use if games are being broadcast or streamed. Four poles are placed around the 10-yard lines and two poles are placed at the 50-yard line.
An 8-pole configuration should be used for large colleges and pro stadiums. In this scenario, supplemental lighting is typically used in addition to the light fixtures mounted on the poles. Four poles are placed around the goal lines and four poles are placed around the 30- or 35-yard lines.
What makes LED lighting better than traditional options for football fields?
LED football stadium lights are the way to go. LED lighting is superior than more traditional types of lighting (such as metal halide):
It has instant-on functionality. No need to wait for lights to "ramp up" before reaching full brightness.
It is much more efficient. This significantly reduces energy costs.
It has a long lifespan, 50,000 hours or more. This reduces maintenance costs because there is no need to constantly replace old fixtures when they reach the end of their life.
It is more durable because it lacks fragile filaments, and it can withstand harsh weather conditions.
Can LED lighting reduce operating costs?
LED lighting reduces operating costs in many ways:
It is much more efficient than other types of lighting, such as metal halide. This significantly reduces energy costs.
It has a long lifespan, 50,000 hours or more. This reduces maintenance costs because there is no need to constantly replace old fixtures when they reach the end of their life.
